SmartMedia 4MB 5V emulator

smartmare

A new 4MB 5V memory card for old samplers, synthesizers and cameras.

SmartMare is new hardware that emulates a SmartMedia 4MB 5V card: your gear sees an original card. Those cards stopped being made years ago, and used ones are rare and expensive. And SmartMare has a USB-C port: plug it into your computer to back up the card.

What it does

Emulates a SmartMedia 4MB 5V card

Slide it into your gear: it formats, saves and loads your sounds and songs exactly like an original SmartMedia 4MB 5V card.

Back it up on your computer

Plug it in with a USB cable and save everything on it to your computer. Put it back any time.

Your own sounds on the SP-202

On a BOSS SP-202 sampler, put your own WAV files on its pads from your computer, and get its sounds back out.

For which gear

Anything that takes SmartMedia 4MB 5V cards: samplers, grooveboxes, synthesizers, and a few early digital cameras. Check your manual: if it says SmartMedia, 5V, 4MB, SmartMare works in it.

SmartMare is longer than a regular card: about 4 cm stay outside the slot, so on a camera the card door may not close. Exact size and more: How it works.

Questions

What is SmartMedia?

A small, thin memory card from the late '90s. Samplers, grooveboxes, synthesizers and early digital cameras saved their sounds, songs, settings and photos on it. It came in several sizes and two voltages: SmartMare emulates the 4MB 5V kind, the one the gear above uses. Nobody makes these cards anymore, and used ones are getting rare and expensive.

What does "emulates" mean?

There is no SmartMedia memory chip inside. A small processor answers your gear exactly as a SmartMedia 4MB 5V card would, and keeps your data in its own memory. Your gear cannot tell the difference. That is also what lets SmartMare talk to your computer over USB-C.

Will it work in my gear?

If your gear takes SmartMedia 4MB 5V cards, yes: SmartMare has the same shape and contacts. It is longer, though: about 4 cm stay outside the slot, with the USB-C port. Tested in the BOSS SP-202; the others are being tested. Exact size

What is special about the SP-202 version?

It is the same card with extra software for the BOSS SP-202: from your computer, you put your own sounds on its pads and get its sounds back out as WAV files. You can switch between the two versions at any time.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Plugged into a computer, the card shows up like a USB stick with its own page on it. Open it in Chrome or Edge and you are ready.

Can I try it first?

Yes, in your browser, no card needed: try the demos.

Do I pay now?

No. The pre-order reserves cards in the first batch. The final price will be between €57 and €77, depending on how many cards are made: we email it to you with the date before the batch, and you confirm only if you still want the cards.

Is it open source?

Yes. The source code will be published, and more features are on the way. Tell us what you would like in the form.

Is SmartMare made by Roland or BOSS?

No. SmartMare is an independent product by Dead Horse Engineering, not affiliated with or endorsed by Roland Corporation or the owners of the SmartMedia trademark. Their names are used only to say what the card works with.
