How it works

There is no SmartMedia memory chip inside SmartMare. A small processor emulates a SmartMedia 4MB 5V card for your gear, and keeps your data in its own memory. Its software, the firmware, can be changed from your computer, and comes in two versions.

Two firmwares

Same card, same price. We install the one you choose, and you can switch any time from your computer.

Generic firmware

For any SmartMedia 4MB 5V gear

Emulates a SmartMedia 4MB 5V card, plus exact backups on your computer.

  • Works like the original: your gear formats the card, saves and loads.
  • Exact backups of the whole card, kept on your computer.
  • Put a backup back, or erase the card to blank.
  • Firmware updates from your browser.

On your computerCard Manager

SP-202 firmware

A custom firmware for the BOSS SP-202

The same card, with a custom samples loader for the SP-202.

  • Your own WAV files on the pads, in every quality, mono or stereo.
  • Every pad back out as a WAV, including what you sampled on the SP-202.
  • Each pad set from your computer: trim, gate, loop, effects.
  • Whole kits kept on the card, loaded in seconds.

On your computerPad Editor, the custom samples loader

Same card, same price: €57–77. The SP-202 firmware is not another card, just a custom firmware for SmartMare. Both firmwares are free on the downloads page, and you can switch as often as you like.

The card

The same card, whatever the firmware. In the slot, it has the size, thickness, notch and 22 contacts of a SmartMedia card. Outside, a handle carries the USB-C port.
