SmartMare 5V

Emulates a SmartMedia 4MB 5V card. There is no SmartMedia memory chip inside: a small processor answers your gear exactly as an original card would, and keeps your data in its own memory. Its software, the firmware, can be changed from your computer, and comes in two versions.

The gear it works in

In any gear with a 5V SmartMedia slot, SmartMare 5V acts as a regular SmartMedia 4MB card: samplers, grooveboxes, synthesizers, and a few early digital cameras. On the BOSS SP-202, it does more: a sample loader and more features made for it. Check your manual: if it says SmartMedia, 5V, 4MB, it belongs here.

  • Your own WAV files on the pads, in every quality, mono or stereo.
  • Every pad back out as a WAV, including what you sampled on the SP-202.
  • Each pad set from your computer: trim, gate, loop, effects.
  • Whole kits kept on the card, loaded in seconds.

On your computerCard Manager

Same card, same price: €57–77. The SP-202 firmware is not another card, just a custom firmware for SmartMare 5V. Both firmwares are free on the downloads page, and you can switch as often as you like.

The card

The same card, whatever the firmware. In the slot, it has the size, thickness, notch and 22 contacts of a SmartMedia card. It keeps its 37 mm width all along; the part that stays outside carries the electronics and the USB-C port.

SmartMare 5V seen from above, to scale: a straight card 37 mm wide and 94.5 mm long. The first 45 mm go into the slot like a SmartMedia card; 49.5 mm stay outside, with the USB-C port at the end. USB-C 5V notch front panel 45 · in the slot 49.5 · outside 94.5 · total length 37

If it fits, it works.

Any gear that takes SmartMedia 4MB 5V cards takes SmartMare 5V. It is just longer than a regular card: 49.5 mm stay outside the slot, so on a camera the card door may not close.
